DATAMITE at Enlit Europe 2024

Enlit Europe, one of the biggest EU energy events, was held from 22 to 24 October in Milan, Italy. The conference attracts 15,000 visitors, brings together more than 700 exhibiting companies, over 80 thematic sessions and more than 100 EU-funded projects, and features 500 speakers. Thanks to our energy use cases, led by our partners E-REDES and HEDNO, DATAMITE has been a perfect match for Enlit Europe 2024.

E-REDES and Hedno, another partner of the consortium, brought DATAMITE to Enlit Europe with a very nice booth located at the EU Projects Zone. The booth had a screen to project the video presentation of the project and an information area with different materials such as brochures, used by the partners present at the event to make DATAMITE known among the thousands of attendees.

On the second day of the conference, Ricardo Almeida Henriques (E.-REDES) had the opportunity to present DATAMITE in the session ‘Energy efficiency and optimisation with digital technologies’. During the session, he demonstrated how DATAMITE can contribute to the energy transition from two action points. On the one hand, by boosting data exchange between energy stakeholders, currently being tested in the E-REDES pilot project. On the other hand, by enabling the development of new system planning tools by improving data accessibility and sharing, which is the main objective of the HEDNO pilot project.

DATAMITE at the European Big Data Value Forum (EBDVF) 2024

The European Big Data Value Forum (EBDVF) 2024 took place from 2 to 4 October in Budapest, Hungary. The event, organised by the Big Data Value Association (BDVA), brings together industry professionals, business developers, researchers and policy-makers from all over Europe and other regions of the world to advance policy actions, and industrial and research activities in the areas of Data and AI.

For the second year in a row, DATAMITE was present during the three days of the forum. This year, with a twist, it did so as part of the EUDATA+ cluster that brings together six Horizon Europe projects (enRichMyData, UPCAST, PISTIS, Graph-Massivizer, FAME and DATAMITE) to create synergies that revolutionise data monetisation. The cluster participated in EBDVF with a 6-square-metre booth and a 2-hour session.

The EUDATA+ cluster organised the session 'Advancing Data Lifecycle Management: Tools and Strategies for Enhanced Monetisation', a technical session in which the six cluster projects explored in depth the data lifecycle, from data generation to data monetisation, showcasing their innovative tools and solutions and explaining how these technologies can improve companies' data management and monetisation strategies. The session was divided into two parts. The first part consisted of a 10-minute presentation by a representative of each project on how their respective project is working to improve data monetisation, and the second part consisted of a panel discussion

Before the first part, Richard Stevens, Associate Vice President at IDC, introduced the Alliance and the data lifecycle detailing how each project supports the different stages of this process. Jordi Arjona (ITI), technical coordinator of DATAMITE, was the DATAMITE spokesperson. He focused his presentation on how companies can improve the metadata enrichment of their data to facilitate its location in tools such as data catalogues and monitor its quality.

Daniel Alonso Román, Senior Technical Lead for Big Data and AI ecosystems at BDVA, moderated the panel discussion. Under the title 'Key technical gaps and challenges to pave the way for data exploitation', the speakers discussed the main technical gaps and challenges in data exploitation, identifying common problems and exploring possible solutions to maximise the benefits of data use.

"DATAMITE's participation in the EBDVF has been very satisfactory. Not only has the session allowed us to show the progress of the project, but thanks to the visibility of our stand, we have also been able to make new and exciting contacts. After the event, the possibility of expanding the EUDATA+ alliance with new projects that join forces is much closer", concludes Santiago Cáceres, DATAMITE Coordinator.

Realising Dataspaces with Eclipse Dataspace Components and DATAMITE

On the 8th of October, DATAMITE had the pleasure to participate in the second episode of the Eclipse webinar series ‘Research meets Open Source’. This episode was called ‘Research meets Open Source - Realising Dataspaces with Eclipse Dataspace Components and DATAMITE’, and as its title suggests, DATAMITE played a key role.

The webinar featured two talks. The first one was called ‘New concepts for cross-company data sharing: Eclipse Dataspace Components Framework’, by Markus Spiekermann from Huawei Technologies. And the second one was called ‘DATAMITE: An open-source framework to enable data monetisation’ by Jordi Arjona, DATAMITE technical coordinator, from ITI.

Markus Spiekermann’s session addressed key questions about dataspaces, focusing on how their concepts have evolved over time to enable a data-driven economy and build trust in data sharing between organisations. Attendees learned how the Eclipse Dataspace Components framework helps create compliant dataspaces by attaching policies, announcing data, negotiating agreements and controlling data transfers. The session also reviewed the progress made over the past three years, explored how EDC supports this evolution, and provided a preview of upcoming specifications, including the Dataspace Protocol (DSP) and Decentralised Claims Protocol (DCP).

Jordi Arjona's talk explained how the DATAMITE project tackles challenges related to data monetization, interoperability, trading, and exchange by delivering a modular, open-source, and multi-domain framework. Designed to support European companies, DATAMITE provides software modules, training, and business materials to help them become significant players in the data economy. The session also reviewed the functionalities of the different modules being developed within the project.

You can watch the recording of the webinar here.
